Dog behaviour tips don’t work for everyone

The internet is packed full of tips that promise to fix all your dogs behaviour and training problems. The trouble is, there is so much conflicting information that it is near impossible to know where to start.

If you’re lucky, you might find that golden nugget straight away, and voila, you’re done. But, if you are like most people, you could be embarking on a long, frustrating, and often expensive, journey based on trial and error.

Confused by conflicting dog training tips?

So, you hit the internet. You’re spending hours in Facebook groups and forums, reading blogs and watching YouTube videos. You work through the tips, one after another, never knowing if this will be “the one.” You stick each one out for a while, but eventually you just give up and try something else, not knowing if you should stick it out longer, or if it genuinely isn’t working. It’s not long before you start to wonder if there’s actually something wrong with your dog, or even you?

What wrong with your dog?

Why didn’t any of it work?

The answer is simple… your dog is different, and so are you. That’s it!

The truth is, there is nothing wrong with you, your dog, or the tips at all. The tips have all worked for someone.

But, your dog is special. He is not the same as that other dog, not even close. His motivations are different, his experiences and upbringing are different, and there might be other related behaviours that have been missed, or maybe this training technique conflicts with the rest of his training. And that’s just for starters, what about his environment, state of health, general personality, age, diet… all different. I think you get the picture.

And what about you? Maybe you didn’t do it in quite the same way, maybe your tone wasn’t right, or maybe your timing was off and you accidentally rewarded the wrong behaviour. Maybe, you didn’t like using the technique but did it anyway because you are desperate to help your pal, and he saw right through it (yes, they can totally do that!)

Did you do it wrong?

When you think of it this way, it’s no surprise the tips didn’t help you.

Twenty years ago, I was just like you, frantically researching new ideas and training techniques so I could help my own dog. A “trainer” had recommended me some pretty abusive methods. But, there was no way I was going to try them on my dog, so I had no choice but to find my own way.

I was lucky and I made progress quickly, but it took me the best part of a year to piece together enough information to permanently solve ALL the problems we had.

Imagine you could bypass all of that…

What if you could skip straight to the part where you have a training plan that you know will work for you, and your dog, and one you are proud to follow.

Proper assessment

No more hours spent scouring the internet and no more time wasted on methods that may not be working.

How great would that be?

Working with you in your home, I will properly assess your dog and the problems you are having. I’ll figure out why your dog does what he does, what makes him tick, what influences his behaviour, and I’ll look out for those pesky related behaviours too.

Then, using my best tried and tested techniques, we’ll start the training. Together, we’ll work with your dog, during your session, so you can see it all working for you.

All this in under three hours!

No force, no fear!

I have fifteen years experience rehabilitating dogs in private homes, rescue centres, and with my own rescue dogs. All that experience has allowed me to practise and hone the techniques I use. My methods embrace all that experience and knowledge, so I can quickly get to the root of the problem, and match the right solution to the right dog.

I have more than 15 years experience solving all kinds of canine behaviour problems, at home and in rescue. A bad experience with a old fashioned dog trainer inspired me to learn more about dog behaviour, and it is because of him, that I wall never use harsh methods when training and rehabilitating dogs.

I work privately with clients in Dundee and the surrounding area with dogs of all ages, breeds and issues including anxiety, aggression and hyperactivity.

In 2009 I was proud to publish a book about dog behaviour and training. How to be the Perfect Pack Leader (by Caroline Jenkins) remains popular today and a follow up is expected very shortly.
